SWEATERS 101: HOW TO WEAR V-NECKS AND QUARTER-ZIPS
We have a confession: Sometimes, crewnecks bore us.
That’s why we love a man who eschews the usual sweater and instead goes for something a little different: a v-neck or quarter-zip. That fashion choice comes with great rewards—the two sweater styles can be dressed up or down in a flash, making them some of the most versatile wardrobe pieces a guy can have.
But what, exactly, should one wear with the sweaters? Read on for a few tips, then visit The Met to peruse our collection of v-neck and quarter zip sweaters by Zegna, Armani and Peter Millar. Once you do, the crewneck just might become an endangered species.
For weekends
Running Saturday errands? Go super-casual with a t-shirt under your sweater. For a dressier option, try a button-down shirt open at the collar—you can pair it with jeans and leave the shirt untucked to ensure your hip quotient is high. As always, be sure to color coordinate: If you’re donning a green sweater (hey, St. Patrick’s Day is coming up), a checked shirt with a hint of green will make you look perfectly pulled-together. Not up to playing the match game? A plain white shirt under your sweater is always in style.
For work
That quarter-zip will go from casual to class-act—and be more than office-appropriate—with a button-down shirt, tie and trousers. But if really want to dress to impress, go with a v-neck—its more traditional look will offer an immediate air of formality, especially when worn under a suit or sportcoat. One big no-no: When you’re wearing a v-neck with a dress shirt, never let the collar rest on top of the “v.” Frankly, we shudder just thinking about it.
For after hours
Our favorite way to rock a v-neck on a night out? Wear it under a leather jacket. During these still-chilly months, the ensemble will help you stay extra-warm—and, best of all, look extra-cool.
