Shops can expect a busy run-up to Christmas this year, with new research from The Green Insurer, revealing that just under a third (30 per cent) of Brits plan to shop on Christmas Eve.
The nationwide study highlights the continued reliance on high streets, even as online shopping dominates the festive season. Nearly all (93 per cent) respondents plan to shop online to some extent, with two in five (39 per cent) saying that half or more of their Christmas shopping will be done digitally. Among them, 16 per cent expect over 75 per cent of their festive purchases to come from online retailers.
However, despite the convenience of online shopping, more than half (51 per cent) of Brits say they will be using physical stores to complete 50 per cent or more of their Christmas shopping spend. This finding and the need for last-minute purchases will mean bustling high streets up and down the country in the final week before Christmas.
The research reveals that around three in 10 (29 per cent) shoppers expect to have finished their seasonal shopping by December 18th. Women are slightly more organized, with one in three (33 per cent) saying their shopping will be completed by December 18th, compared to one in four (24 per cent) men.
Paul Baxter, CEO, The Green Insurer, said: “Despite the dominance of online shopping, the festive rush to the high street is far from over, with millions of people planning to shop right up to Christmas Eve. It’s a reminder that even in the digital age, the draw of the Christmas lights and decorated high street shops is still a big part of the season.
“For many, leaving their shopping until the last minute isn’t just about procrastination; it’s about enjoying the festive shopping experience and finding those perfect and personal gifts. With so many people planning to still be shopping up to Christmas Eve, it’s clear that the high street will continue to play a key role in Christmas buying this year.”
