Spooky season is here, and as the self-proclaimed queen of Halloween, I love nothing more than dreaming up costumes for groups, best friends, and couples. The trick, though, is picking something that people instantly recognize and focusing on the details—because as fun as a niche costume can be, it’s less fun having to explain who you are all night. Last year, for example, I DIY’d Chappell Roan’s album cover look down to a tee, and while there were tons of people dressed as Chappell, I ended up winning a costume contest because people immediately got it.
This year, we’ve had no shortage of pop culture moments—from blockbuster movies to viral performances—and you can bet they’ll be everywhere this Halloween. So if you want to be “in” on this year’s halloween costume trends, these are the costumes guaranteed to turn heads.
Elphaba and Glinda from Wicked
This iconic duo is perfect for sisters or best friends, regardless of age (Wicked is for everyone!). Last year, Wicked was released after Halloween, and it was a huge success. With Part Two of the film, Wicked: For Good, premiering in late November, buzz around Elphaba and Glinda is only growing.
Plus, these are easy costumes to execute if you want to DIY them. Simply pair a pink dress with a tiara for Glinda (and a wand if you want to really sell it), and a black dress, green body paint, and a witch’s hat for Elphaba.
The Addams Family from Wednesday
Episodes of season 2 of Wednesday were released in August and September, just in time to inspire Halloween costumes (again). Given the show’s popularity—and the instantly recognizable outfits of the Addams family members—you’ll be sure to see kids, adults, couples, and families dressing as these iconic characters.
To DIY Wednesday’s outfit, dress in a black dress with a white collar, or cater more specifically to the TV show and dress in a striped blazer, white collared shirt, black skirt, and black tie. Most importantly, don’t forget to put your hair into two braids.
For Morticia’s outfit, wear any long black dress with sleeves (bonus points if they’re bell sleeves). To dress as Gomez, you can wear a black suit or a pinstriped shirt.
HUNTR/X from KPop Demon Hunters
This TV show is huge among kids, tweens and even adults, so you’ll be sure to see a ton of trick-or-treaters dressed as the characters, K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. This costume is a bit harder to DIY, unless you’re a pro sewer. Luckily, there are tons of pre-made costumes of these popular characters available online. Just make sure to order them ahead of time, because they’ll most likely sell out as it gets closer to Halloween.
Superman
Listen, I know Superman is a classic Halloween costume. It’s trickled off in popularity over the years, but I’m expecting a resurgence this October, thanks to the popularity of the 2025 Superman movie. You can go the old school route and dress like Clark Kent with a white collared shirt, dress pants, glasses, and a Superman T-shirt underneath. Or, you can commit to the bit and get a full-blown costume.
Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo
Whether you’re a fan of one or both, there’s no denying these two are superstars. Their iconic outfits from their tours this past year are instantly recognizable, and while there’s no hard evidence that the duo are friends, the history between them makes this a funny costume for two best friends.
To execute Olivia’s tour iconic outfit, grab a white tank top and decorate it with fabric markers and wear sparkly shorts, star-sequined tights, and combat boots. For Sabrina, wear a sparkly top-and-mini-skirt set with white boots. Make sure to pay attention to the girls’ different makeup styles for bonus points!
