World War I, four years and three months of carnage on the scale not yet seen in the modern age, was supposed to be “the war to end all wars.” As such its end was a cause for worldwide celebration.
Veterans Day began in 1919 as Armistice Day to mark the moment when hostilities ended a century ago today on Nov. 11, 1918. The holiday has endured just as mankind’s propensity to wage war has endured through regional and worldwide conflicts that continue to this day.
So as we celebrate Veterans Day, we encourage you to enjoy the parade in downtown Fairfield or any of the other events happening across the county. While you’re there, take a moment to thank a veteran for his or her service. Then, once you’re safely home, sit back and enjoy the features in our Veterans Day section.
