The summer months have flown by, and somehow it’s already August, which means the first day of school is just a few weeks away. If you haven’t already, it’s definitely time to start thinking about back-to-school shopping. In addition to school supplies like notebooks and backpacks, now’s the perfect time to buy new clothing for the upcoming school year.

There are a number of back-to-school fashion trends that you’re sure to see all over the hallways this fall, and many of them feature bright colors and loose silhouettes. These popular trends let you showcase your personal style while staying comfortable during long hours in the classroom—perfect for the first day of school and all semester long.

Here are several of our favorite back-to-school trends that you’re going to see everywhere this year.

1. Wide-leg pants

Move over skinny jeans, baggy denim is making a huge comeback.

Skinny jeans have been the go-to style for several years now, but gone are the days of squeezing into skin-tight denim. Today, wide-leg pants are quickly gaining popularity thanks to their casual-yet-cool look, and they’re much less restricting than their skinny counterparts. For these reasons, designs like the Eco Ripped Low Rise Baggy Jeans are going to be a high school staple this year. These jeans are easy to style and have a ripped knee slit and raw hem for added edge.

$60 at PacSun

Wide-leg cargo pants are poised to be popular, as well. The Canvas Wide-Leg Cargo Pants have a variety of pockets where you can stash your phone, wallet and other supplies, and the partially elasticized waist offers a comfortable fit.

$25 at Forever 21

On those days when you just want to be comfy in class, the Cozy Wide Leg Pants will be your go-to bottoms. The pull-on style is made from a super-soft fabric and has a subtle ribbed texture.

$49 at Abercrombie&Fitch

2. Barbiecore

Pink is the new black thanks to the Barbiecore trend.

In response to the upcoming Barbie movie, which stars Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, hot pink has been having a major moment. The so-called “Barbiecore” trend is all the rage right now, and all it takes is to dress in bright pink hues from head to toe. Start with a top like the Up For the Weekend Pink Cutout Bodysuit, then layer it with the Remikstyt Womens Chunky Cardigan for some serious pink-on-pink action.

$34 at Lulus$39 at Amazon

You can embrace your inner Barbie during PE with the hot pink MakeMeChic Women’s Sweat Shorts, which have a drawstring waist for a secure fit, or the chic Johanna Rib Onesie in hot pink from athleisure brand Year of Ours.

$19 at Amazon$120 from Year of Ours

Or, just add a touch of Barbie to any outfit with accessories like Tinted Lens Fashion Glasses. They might not offer any protection from the sun, but they’ll certainly be eye-catching as you stroll through the halls of your school.

$4 at Shein

3. Matching athleisure

Matching athleisure sets are the perfect no-fuss option when you don't feel like getting ready.

If comfort is your top priority when getting dressed in the morning, you’ll be happy to know that matching athleisure sets are still extremely trendy. Pair pieces like the Perfectly Oversized Cropped Crew and the Softstreme Relaxed High-Rise Pant for a coordinated outfit that’s oh-so comfortable all day long.

Some brands even sell two-piece outfits to make it easy to match your loungewear. The Fixmatti Women’s Two-Piece Outfit includes a pullover top with a faux turtleneck and matching drawstring jogger pants that are slightly cropped to show off your shoes.

$40 at Amazon

4. Platform shoes

The chunky shoe trend has arrived just in time for chillier fall days.

Leave your classmates wondering if you grew several inches over the summer. Platform shoes, which have extra-thick soles, are stylish this year, and we’re not just talking about high heels, either. There are lots of cool platform sneakers that you can wear to class, including the LUCKY STEP Women Chunky Platform Sneakers and the adidas Originals Women’s Nizza Platform Sneaker.

$46 at Amazon$49 at Amazon

If your style is a bit edgier, you can grab a pair of platform boots. The Dr. Martens Women’s Shriver Boot is a classic choice—it’s made from real leather and has a 1.5-inch platform sole.

$135 at Amazon

5. Belt bags

Despite their compact size, these bags can hold everything you need.

You may used to be calling them “fanny packs,” but these hands-free accessories have recently been giving a fashion rebrand. Enter, the belt bag. Both practical and trendy,  belt bags are having a total moment right now, and are great for everyday use to carry all your essentials—gum, keys, hand sanitizer, you name it. There’s a huge variety of  belt bags on the fashion scene right now, with no shortage of different shades, silhouettes, and materials to suit your taste.

The Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag is one option that’s been soaring in popularity, frequently going in and out of stock online. It features several zippered and mesh pockets to help keep you organized on the go, as well as an adjustable strap so you can sling it over your shoulder or around your waist.

$38 at Lululemon

Another cute, retro choice is the Abanu Multi from Kipling, a brand you’ll likely recognize by the signature monkey keychain that adorns its durable bags and accessories. This throwback bag will keep you looking super cute heading back to school or campus, and doesn’t skimp on functionality with its multiple zip compartments, removable crossbody strap and clip closure.

$79 at Kipling

For something more affordable, this $22 Zorfin belt bag has accumulated more than 6,000 positive ratings from Amazon shoppers, and is available in a whopping 21 colors, with bright neons, florals and more to make your outfit pop.

$22 at Amazon

6. Oversized sweaters

For days when you need to throw something on and run out the door.

Continuing with the theme of comfortable clothing, oversized sweaters will be a fall staple in 2022. You can keep things simple with an option like the Women’s Oversized Los Angeles Crewneck or show some personality with a bright top like the Sheep Drop-Sleeve Sweater. These sweaters can be styled with jeans, leggings or even biker shorts. Size up for an extra-baggy appearance.

$40 at Forever 21$31 at Amazon

7. Tie dye

These funky patterns will make for a colorful addition to any 'fit.

Tie-dye is holding on as one of the hottest styles to sport today. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can create your own multi-colored clothing with a tie-dye kit, but there are plenty of pre-made designs to choose from, as well. The Just Relax Blue Multi Tie-Dye Shirt Dress can be styled as either a top or a mini dress, and it has an eye-catching blue, pink, orange and white tie-dye print that’s sure to earn you compliments.

$42 at Lulus

Once the weather starts to cool down, you’ll want to wear the Aleumdr Womens Tie Dye Sweatshirt all the time. The tie-dye design comes in several color options, and it’s made from soft polyester fabric.

$27 at Walmart

Guys can get in on the tie-dye fun, too! The adidas Essential Tie Dyed T-Shirt has a comfortable crew cut, and its dappled tie dye pattern is sure to earn you compliments on the way to class.

$25 at PacSun

8. Bucket hats

Say goodbye to bad hair days with these fun, patterned hats.

No outfit is complete without a bucket hat this school year, and luckily, these trendy accessories are super affordable, meaning you can get a few options. The Mashiaoyi Reversible Bucket Hat has a unisex design, and you basically get two hats in one thanks to its reversible pattern. Plus, it comes in a variety of fun prints, from flowers to bananas to tie-dye.

$14 at Amazon

If you prefer a plain hat, the Standard Cloth Cotton Bucket Hat is available in several trendy solid hues, such as a dusty pink and blue-gray.

$10 at Urban Outfitters

You can even combine two trends into one with the adidas Color Wash Bucket Hat. It has a tie-dye finish that comes in several color options, and the hat features a shorter brim that won’t block your vision.

$15 at Kohl’s

9. Head-to-toe denim

Make Justin and Britney proud with an all-denim look.

When it comes to denim, more is more in 2022. You’re going to see lots of head-to-toe denim ensembles, and you can get in on the action with clothes like the Marla Trouser Jumpsuit. It comes in two colors, and the coverall has a relaxed, tapered silhouette that’s both flattering and comfortable.

$128 at Free People

You can also embrace the denim trend with a pair of overalls, such as the WallFlower Women’s Denim Overalls. These pants come in a variety of hues and have fun criss-crossed straps in the back.

$38 at Amazon

Who said overalls have to be pants? The Lily Parker Ripped Denim Overall is actually a short dress made from stylish denim, and you can put a T-shirt underneath it for a school-friendly outfit.

$44 at Amazon

12 Trends For College Kids Going Back To School

If a teen or twenty-something you know is heading off to college in a few weeks, time is of the essence for them to curate their back to school style statement. Whether they’re a fan of “funky ’fits” or prefer clean lines like Hailey Bieber, making note of these 12 trends will show them you know what’s what. After all, their wardrobe is basically a calling card that communicates interests, acts as a conversation starter and helps them feel confident in new situations.

With that in mind, I spoke to 19-year-old Arizona State University sophomore, Jaxson Hofmann, who has a knack for assembling unique outfits that turn heads and get lots of compliments. Like many college students, he favors Nike Dunks, Birkenstocks and Doc Martens and juxtaposes colors and textures. Hofmann says he enjoys “putting together funky outfits” that are, simply put, “dope.”

And Hofmann’s not alone. It’s clear that the days of copy and paste trends are over. Gen-Z is more inclined to cultivate unique aesthetics that will permeate all aspects of their lives from décor to music, etc. Thanks to Hofmann’s tips and this millennial writer’s TikTok habit, 12 trends stand out as the major players on college campuses this fall.

The 12 Best Back-To-School Trends For College Kids

Clean Girl Aesthetic

MOST POPULAR

A&F Oversized Poplin Button-Up Shirt

$47$59SAVE $12 (20%)

The Clean Girl Aesthetic trend is ideal for college, since it makes it easy to get ready quickly and look polished with little effort. It’s all about elevated basics. Pair this button down with your favorite jeans or linen shorts, tiny gold hoops and slicked-back hair and you’re ready for class or the extracurriculars of your choosing.

Old-School Prep Style

Mango Knitted Cotton Gilet

$30

Whether you call it ’80s Country Club Chic or the #OldMoneyAesthetic hashtag as popularized on TikTok, a knitted gilet or cardigan with stripes is a great way to nail this trend. Bonus point for adding pearl earrings and a white tennis skirt.

Tie-Dye As A Neutral

Nirvana Smile Overdyed Sweatshirt

$79

Aside the obvious fact that this sweatshirt proves you have good taste in music, the tie-dye accent really makes this piece stand out. Because it’s both a staple color (black) and multi-colored, it promises to get a lot of wear in your wardrobe. Plus, remember when I mentioned fashion as a conversation starter? This is definitely one.

Baggy Grunge-Inspired Looks

AGOLDE ’90s Jeans

$190

Skinny jeans are officially out (as of a few years now) and they’ve been replaced by a baggier mid-rise jean that harkens to mind the ’90s grunge scene. These look great with an oversized T-shirt and gold dainty jewelry or a crop top and fresh sneakers.

Mean, Green Athleisure Chic

Quince Flowknit Ultra-Soft Performance Cropped Tank

$30

More a lifestyle than a trend, sustainability is an important factor when building a back-to-school wardrobe. Many college students love to thrift and upcycle pieces, which is fantastic but can sometimes be time consuming. I love Quince, a brand that also features linens, Mongolian cashmeres and cottons in its cozy athletic-inspired wear. It’s sustainably crafted but very affordably priced.

Boho-Flowy With An Edge

Free People Denver Crop Long Sleeve Cotton Top

$30$48SAVE $18 (38%)

Whether it’s a tank top, a sweatshirt, a sweater or vest, it’s most likely going to be cropped. This option is a stand-out because it’s still modest enough for the classroom but loose enough that you’ll stay cool.

Matchy-Matchy…With A Twist

Madewell Variegated Corduroy Shorts

$64$72SAVE $8 (11%)

There’s nothing like a matching set to take the guesswork out of getting dressed. They’re also such a uniquely versatile option because they can be styled so many different ways. This particular set is a strong pick because it packs the unexpected texture of corduroy, making it a great option for evenings or fall thanks to it’s heavier fabric.

Day-Glo Everything (But Especially Dunks)

Nike Dunk Low SE in Sun Club

$145

You can’t go wrong with a pair of dunks, but they’re especially en vogue if they’re low and include a handful of fun colors or accents that set them apart. They’re also comfortable enough for all-day wear—even if your classes are on opposite sides of campus.

An Oversized Statement Piece

Grlasen Women’s Oversized Blazer

$56

Similar to the cropped trend, the oversized trend applies to tops, jeans, jackets and pretty much everything else. You can easily integrate this trend into your closet by pairing an oversized blazer or shacket with a cropped tank and jeans or athleisure, as seen above.

Shorts That Show More Leg

Nike Dri-FIT Stride 2-in-1 Running Shorts

$65

Whether you’re working out, walking to class or relaxing with friends, shorts that hit mid-thigh are very much in style at the moment. These also come in a handful of fun colors so you can get attention for all the right reasons.

Dainty Cottagecore Prints

Hill House Home The Ellie Nap Dress

$150

Feminine and breathy, the cottagecore aesthetic features lots of florals and light fabrics. This dress specifically is a versatile staple in any college closet as it can be dressed up for a date or party or dressed down for class with zero fuss.

Itty-Bitty Accessories

JW PEI Women’s Gabbi Ruched Hobo Handbag

$89

You may not be able to fit your books in it, but an on-trend bag at the moment will fit your lip gloss, pens and pencils, phone, wallet and keys. If you’re really wanting to nail the trend, you can even go smaller with a micro mini bag (think: the Jacquemus bag).
