‘Hocus Pocus,’ ‘Van Helsing’ And More Of The Top Halloween Movies In 2024
When it comes to the top Halloween movies of 2024, you can’t beat the classics. Four of the most-watched streaming films of this spooky season are movies that have been available for at least a year.
And only two of the top 10 Halloween titles were released in 2024. People love rewatching the same scary films over and over again, and they especially prefer movies that are part of an existing franchise or pop culture touchpoint.
That’s according to data from Samba TV, a provider of TV technology for audience data and omniscreen measurement, which provided a list of the top 10 Halloween movies on streaming this year from October 1 to October 20. The data includes linear airings as well as on-demand streaming.
The No. 1 film is, no surprise, Disney+’s Hocus Pocus. The original in the two-movie family-friendly franchise debuted in 1993. At the time, it was considered a flop—it made less than $40 million in theaters and barely out-earned its $28 million budget.
But the film found a second life after its 2002 release on DVD. A few years later, Disney noted that the movie saw a significant takeoff in sales, and it became a beloved Halloween favorite, so much so that the company made Hocus Pocus 2 in 2022, releasing it exclusively on streaming.

That was an instant hit—and indeed is this year’s second-most-watched Halloween movie per the Samba list.
New Halloween Movies Build on Proven Franchises
Many familiar titles appear on the top 10 list, and very few of them are standalones. One exception is Tim Burton’s wildly popular animated tour de force The Nightmare Before Christmas, which the director has insisted will not get a sequel. Nightmare ranks fourth on the top Halloween movies list
One of the only new Halloween films in the top 10, Max’s Salem’s Lot, is based on a bestselling Stephen King book, so while it is a new interpretation, it is not new material. The other new film on the list, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, is a sequel to a 1988 movie.
And the No. 3 movie on the list, Van Helsing, is getting a sequel in 2025, once again starring Hugh Jackman.
