8 Winter Street Style Fashion Trends to Try

It’s fleece season, people.

DESIGN BY MORGAN MCMULLEN

Winter provides the perfect excuse to throw on jeans and a sweater every day from December through to March, especially for lazy girls like myself. That said, some days call for more than just denim—I work in fashion and even I constantly need the inspiration of celebrities and the street style crowd to pull myself out of style ruts. Especially when New York Fashion Week rolls around in February.

Though the next NYFW is still months away, I’m already taking note of how to cut down on my go-to outfit combination for the colder months. To help, it’s time to brush up on winter’s biggest trends by looking at what your favorite street style stars are wearing. I’ve narrowed down the street style trends to eight digestible looks below. Give them a try, and say adios to the jean/sweater outfit (at least for six out of the seven days of the week).

Furry, Fuzzy Outerwear

Parkas and puffers are great for winter, but when you really want to feel like a million bucks, nothing beats a plush faux fur coat. And you’re never too late to hop on this trend. This season’s offerings are better than ever (I’ve been on the hunt for a suitable option since last winter), with brands debuting furry coats in vibrant colors like pink and cobalt. If colorful fur isn’t your cup of tea, you can easily find a brown or black outerwear alternative. The coats are so cozy, you may even find yourself draped in one while you wait for the heat to be turned on.

Everything Fleece

Sandy Liang’s fleeces have become must-have items for the fashion crowd, and now it feels like all of our favorite brands are offering a fleece-something for the wintery season. Options include mixed prints and color-block designs in pullover styles or the more classic zip-ups we’ve all come to know and love. Fleece is comfortable, soft, warm—basically everything your body craves when the temperature drops to 50-degrees Fahrenheit and below. Give your denim and leather jackets a break for a cozier fleece pick, below.

Two-Tone Dresses

Can’t decide what color you want the garment to come in? The two-tone look solves that problem. Instead of having to stick with one color, you have the option to wear a half-and-half look for winter 2019. Not a fan of two-tone dresses? You can try an alternative like this two-toned Givenchy blazer. This small mash up of hues won’t dramatically alter your look, but it will add a little intrigue—and earn you brownie points for style.

Winter Suiting

The appeal of matching separates lies in the fact that you don’t have to overthink what to wear in the mornings—one decision and you’re ready to head out the door. It’s no surprise, then, that pantsuits have become a staple in a fashion girl’s closet, as evidenced by these street style shots. Whether you choose a check set or a plain colored pantsuit, you’ll feel like an instant boss woman in the ensemble. The Roksanda set is on my wishlist as the designer reimagined a pair of tailored trousers into a more sporty track style—comfy and cool.

Bite-Size Bags

Imagine your favorite handbag shrunken down to the size of your palm—adorable! The fervor for tiny accessories hasn’t lost it steam yet, especially since Jacquemus just launched its newest “Le Chiquiti” bag that wraps around your wrist. Micro bags are whimsical and LOL-inducing, especially when you consider how little you can put in it. Regardless, these accessories are meant to be worn on the weekends and when you’re OOO. For days to you need to lug your work tote around, layer your bags—or, even better, just clip the Medea mini tote, below, onto your bigger bag’s handles to keep that playful attitude going.

Leather Separates

Instead of playing it safe with a leather jacket this season, opt for a cute leather corset or pants. This material is one of fall 2019’s biggest trends and will continue to dominate your wardrobe for the rest of the year. Leather bottoms, my personal favorites, provide an easy way to dress up your beige sweater or even a white t-shirt. Throw on a cardigan or blazer and you’ll be ready to leave your apartment looking like a street style star.

Combat/Hiker Boots

Swap your clunky snow shoes for a sleek pair of combat-meets-hiker boots. This style not only tracks well over snow and ice (thank you rugged soles!), but also looks fashionable enough to wear around the office. The days of keeping spare flats or heels under your desk is over. Street style stars, in particular, have been rocking this utilitarian boot with trousers, dresses, and jeans because as far as boots go, the style is one of the most versatile ones for your wardrobe.

Headbands

Wintertime hat hair is a real and annoying struggle. To fix that in a pinch, throw on a headband. What was once an iconic accessory for Blair Waldorf, headbands are having a resurgence with the fashion crowd in 2019. Fashion houses like Prada released silk satin styles in every color while Jennifer Behr offers embellished options that make your headband as fancy as a royal’s tiara.
