Tory Sport Spring 2018: Activewear That Truly Goes Everywhere
An editor who this editor knows wore her Tory Sport leggings to the Paris shows. A seamless multitasking wardrobe has been Tory Burch’s main talking point since she launched this activewear collection, but now that they’ve crossed that rubicon, there’s really nowhere that those familiar chevron-striped tights can’t go. Presenting her new Spring collection, Burch said the question she and the team asked themselves was “Now that everyone is wearing sport throughout the day, how do we incorporate different categories?”
Their strategy is three-pronged: First, add fashion to function; second and conversely, add function to fashion; and third, incorporate humor wherever possible. That means, for example, that they printed a technical mesh jacket in an oversize navy and red floral, and that cashmere sweatpants were blended with Coolmax fibers so they wick away moisture just like the label’s Tactel leggings. As for humor, it comes in the form of Little Grumps, a tennis ball character introduced last season that now appears both small (as a chest patch on tees) and large (on oversize knits). Tennis is Burch’s sport; appropriately there’s another novelty knit that spells out love.
Tory Sport tennis dresses and golf separates aren’t shoe-ins for the Paris front rows next year (both categories are reportedly growing ones for this brand), but it wouldn’t surprise us to see her pastel windbreakers or color-blocked tracksuits—which are thoughtfully lined in cotton for a soft, comfy feel—making the show rounds.
